America’s favorite dog, Dita the Belgian Malinois, and her beloved human, handler, and star Justin Melnick chat with us about life on and off the screen.
Justin is not your average Hollywood star - his passion for military, servicemen, and for humanity as a whole is palpable.
Justin spent 6 years working as a combat photographer all over the world and it culminated in Afghanistan documenting the war against the Taliban. He’s seen some shit... stuff that we can’t imagine which he talks in detail about. After returning to the states with a passion to serve, he joined the police force in Indiana making a difference in his community.
How the heck did he end up on a TV Show with his Narcotics detection dog? The CBS Seal Team show runner asked him and Dita to be on the show after a visit to set. He brought his real life equipment and more importantly his years of experience. The rest is history...
Unlike most dogs in Hollywood, Dita is a true working dog. She has no replacements or stunt doubles - she does it all. She plays an explosives detection dog on screen, but is trained in narcotics detection. On scene, they replace the explosives odors with narcotics odors.
We also chatted about home life at the ranch in California with his wife, two kids, and a third on the way, the addition of Pepper the Dutch Shepherd on the show, and what Dita is like in real life. Fun fact - Justin doesn’t own a TV. Justin is devoted to giving back to the community and using his platform and stardom for good. He’s a true role model and a leader.
Thank you so much for your time, Justin. You are truly a breath of fresh air. Keep doing what you’re doing bc damn - you’re doing it right!
